What is a cold sore? It is an infection caused by an organism called the herpes simplex virus (HSV). One in Four people get repeating attacks of cold sores (as many as 6 a year). The Infection usually occurs during childhood after being kissed by a relative with a cold sore - because the virus travels through the skin and up travels up the nerve it can hide in the nerve junction until the virus is reactivated and causes a tingling sensation if this not treated the virus replicated causing cold sore blisters.
What causes the cold sore virus to activate? there are a number of things which can trigger the virus to reactivate including cold & flu, periods, stress, bright sunlight, emotion upsets, fatigue, physical injury, feeling run down.
